CBS College Medals

Thanks to the generosity of donors, the College of Biological Sciences presents awards each year to outstanding students at the spring commencement ceremony.

The CBS College Medal:

The College of Biological Sciences awards a College Medal each year to an outstanding student. In addition to a cash prize, the selected student receives a beautiful piece of original art work that represents the broad range of academic disciplines studied at the college (see photo right) and a cash award. The artwork and initial funding for this annual award was made by an anonymous donor. You may also contribute to the funding for this award by contacting a development professional.

  • The 2009 recipient was Emily Dubina. She received a bachelor of science degree in exercise biology.
  • The 2008 recipient was Matthew Tamplen. He received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry & molecular biology. 2008 was the first year that this award was given.

Baskin Research Medal

The Ronald and Lydia Baskin Research award recognizes one graduating senior each year for excellence in research in the biological sciences. Students from all UC Davis undergraduate colleges are eligible for the Baskin Research Award.

Dr. Ronald J. Baskin, professor emeritus of molecular and cellular biology, and his wife Lydia created an endowment in July 2006 to establish this annual award. Recipients receive a beautiful unique glass laser-etched medallion and a cash award.

  • Alexander Muir Sutherland (photo) received the Baskin Research Award in 2009. He graduated with a bachelor of science in chemistry from the UC Davis College of Letters & Science.
  • Amanda Kohler (photo) received the Baskin Research Award in 2008. She graduated with a bachelor of science in biochemistry & molecular biology from the UC Davis College of Biological Sciences.

  • Edgar Ivan Sanchez (photo) received the first Baskin Research Award in 2007 He graduated with a bachelor of science in biomedical engineering at the UC Davis College of Engineering.
