Each year the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) honors a junior faculty member who is making significant contributions in public communication, outreach and education about neuroscience. This year's "Next Generation Award" was bestowed on Karen Zito, an assistant professor in the Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior and with the UC Davis Center for Neuroscience.

In granting the award, the society cited two of Zito's accomplishments: she organized the society's 2008 "Brain Awareness Week" in Davis, reaching out to elementary and high school students in the area; and she has been promoting interactions between graduate students and undergraduate members of the Biology Undergraduate Scholars Program, which serves underrepresented and disadvantaged students.

Zito received the award at the society's annual meeting in Washington, D.C. in November.
